Managing Director, Grameen Shakti, Bangladesh

Sohel Ahmed is currently working as the Managing Director of Grameen Shakti, looking after the overall activities from policy and operational level to local and international liaison and coordination. Grameen Shakti is one of the most successful organization dedicated to create “Access to Energy”, installing more than 1.8 Million Solar Home System, 1 million Improved Cook Stove and 35,000 Bio-gas plant, operating as per the norm of Social Business, emphasizing on Environmental protection, Financial Inclusion and Women Empowerment. He has been working in the field of Renewable Energy for over a decade, having experience of modeling and managing solar portfolios that includes Solar Home System, Solar Irrigation System, Solar Drinking Water, Solar Mini-Grid and so on. Sohel has the experience of working at the field of Carbon Emission Management, leading the CPDS (Carbon Project Development Service), serving to the local industry for CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) project consultancy. He also engaged in Impact Assessment study focusing the local large solar projects delivering energy to the poor and pro-poor. In recent years, Sohel has been intricately involved with SDG implementation, winner of the project “Powering the future we want” of UN DESA in 2017. Under his supervision different projects of Grameen Shakti like Eco-village development, Energy Transition platform, WePOWER etc. are currently in execution level. He is also participating in different local and global forums/workshop/seminar as a panel speaker for sometimes, that includes sessions organized by Asian Development Bank, World Bank and United Nations. Few of the recent events where Sohel has participated as a Speaker/Key discussant are in “Global SDG7 Conference: Implementation of SDG7 and its inter-linkages with other SDGs: Lessons Learnt from UN DESA Energy Grant Finalist” held in Escape Hall, Bangkok from February 21 - 25, 2018 organized by UN DESA and in“Roundtable on SDG 7 on Affordable and Clean Energy” organized by UN ESCAP, UN Environment, UNDP and ADB during Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development 2018 from March 27-30, 2018. Mr. Sohel has participated as key note speaker in “Entrepreneurship Week” jointly organized by University of Michigan and Shanghai Jiao Tong University from September 4-7, 2018. Moreover, he was panelist in “SDG &Renewable Energy” during Global Social Business Summit 2018 in Germany from November 6-9, 2018. Participated in regional meeting of WePOWER (a forum of World Bank), Speaker at Climate and SDGs Synergy Conference in Copenhagen, March 2019, Global Social Business Summit 2019, Participated in COP25, Madrid, 2019 as speaker in side event, attended United Nations General Assembly (UNGA),2019 participated in concept build-up meeting of Eco-village development project, India 2020, High-level Political Forum (HLPF-2020), participated in “Future for All” conference, Germany, 2020 as speaker, participated in “Water & Energy Nexus” webinar organized by UN DESA, October 2020.
