Marcus Merkel is Senior Advisor to the Board of Management of EWE NETZ GmbH, an innovative German DSO. He is Member of the EU-Task Force Smart Grids, Working Group 3 since 2011, Member of the German Platform for Sustainable Energy Networks, Working Group “Intelligent Networks and Metering” (Federal German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy), German Member and Co-Chair of the Eurelectric Working Group on Distribution System Design, Member of the Joint TSO-DSO Working Group since 2016 and Chair of the DSO Committee for Flexibility in Electricity Markets (jointly undertaking of all DSO Associations in Europe) since 2017. Marcus holds two university degrees, one in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration (MBA). Between 2012 and 2014 he has worked on the job as Consultant/Advisor and later as German Expert on a Study on Regulatory Pathways for Smart Grid Development in China. The study project – financed by GIZ - was published by the German Springer Verlag in 2015. In the same year he started on the job supporting research and innovation actions of the European Commission within the Horizon 2020 work programme in the area of smart grids, data management, RES integration and HVDC-grids.
